Toronto police arrest man over death of 20-year-old man

Toronto police have arrested a 21-year-old man on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of someone whose body was found in a car on the city’s north shore.

Police said on Friday a body was found Wednesday in a car on the city’s north shore. While an investigation into the death began, it is unclear how long the person was dead before they were found.

Authorities identified the victim as Kyojiro Yatsuhara, 21, from Toronto. He was fatally stabbed on Wednesday afternoon at 16 Mansfield Place, just north of Lake Ontario.

On Friday, Ontario police said they had arrested a man and charged him with second-degree murder. The man has not been named but police said he was known to police.

The charge comes as Toronto searches for answers about who killed a 15-year-old girl on Monday who had gone missing for 10 days.

Elena Gaitan, 15, had been at a birthday party on the weekend before her body was found in a wooded area near the Sheppard subway station, west of Toronto. She was stabbed to death, police said.

Gaitan’s mother, Fabiola Masina, said her daughter and the killer were good friends. She said her daughter had been at a birthday party at a house where it ended late on Saturday night. Gaitan left at about 9am the next day, and never made it to school on Monday.

“We left the house at 9.30am [on Monday], and we didn’t even get on the road and the car was gone,” Masina said.

Police said on Tuesday that they had arrested three people in connection with Gaitan’s death, and described them as “potential suspects”. However, they said three more people were still being sought.
