Charla Nash, the woman who came to the attention of the National Crime Information Center in 2000 after she was mauled by an African lion in Cincinnati, has been abducted in Haiti by men posing as missionaries. A Washington Post analysis of NCIC data shows that the Obama administration, the George W. Bush administration and the two previous Clinton administrations deployed several thousand special forces and civilian operatives to Haiti between 1997 and 2008 in the effort to save Nash and hundreds of other American missionaries from kidnapping.

The question before the nation now is, after years of failures and underwhelming results by national security specialists, what caused the region’s worst kidnapping crisis since the Haitian revolution 70 years ago to erupt in the first place? Here are the names of some of the Americans who were kidnapped by armed gangs and soldiers or who took fright at the size and power of the armed forces of one of Haiti’s former adversaries, the Dominican Republic, and escaped or were rescued.
