Roblox back online after outage hits millions of users

(CNN) — Roblox, a massively popular game for kids and teens, has been offline for more than 24 hours.

The company experienced a “serious and unprecedented issue with its back-end database hosting” servers late Thursday, Roblox spokesperson Grady Cothen told CNN. It “directly impacted our users worldwide.”

More than one million users have signed a petition and encouraged the company to send a technical apology to them.

The issue appeared to be resolved by Friday.

But things are still a bit messy.

First, all official notifications and player profiles had gone dark since Thursday. Since Friday, all official events have been restored, according to a Roblox spokesperson. But access to developer platforms, such as the channels, forums and bots, remains unavailable.

Roblox allows users to create their own characters, build and manipulate virtual worlds and interact with other players. In addition to games, the company offers a platform for content creators to share their own creations.

“The downtime and platform issues will be resolved quickly and we apologize for the inconvenience,” the spokesperson said, adding “Customer support is available to answer your questions and provide updates through the app store, blog, Twitter, Facebook and the company website.”

Emma Owens, the 16-year-old founder of the petition, said this isn’t the first time Roblox has encountered a bug and a system shutdown.

The petition garnered more than 1,100 signatures from players asking for information about the incident.

“This is like a bug with our brakes and could cause a crash and all of our dreams and ambitions could be crushed,” Owens said, adding that she’s not getting paid by the Roblox community. “Our suffering is our gift to other Robloxers worldwide.”

In an earlier blog post, co-founder Jonathan Lin said the company is working to resolve the issues.

“We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience,” Lin said. “On behalf of Roblox, we thank you for the outpouring of support, and we promise to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.”

There are more than 200 million registered players worldwide on Roblox, according to the company.
