Beer. Pork. Flavors. - The James Plaza in Toronto is serving unique BBQ this winter

Afternoon Canadians can hit up this unique Asian barbecue at an unlikely place this month—the sprawling James Plaza shopping and retail complex in the city’s north end.

It’s not a traditional restaurant, it’s a “gourmet pit” serving seven sauces that combine whatever Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, or Malaysian cuisine can offer.

For the first time, the Toronto restaurant will offer French fries, and just in time: YYC foods, along with Toronto’s chili poutine, are coming on the menu at the other James Plaza restaurants as temperatures continue to fall this month.

The owners first opened the James Gourmet Pit last year, when temperatures in Toronto dropped to –30° C in the city last winter.

At this current moment in the coldest winter of the decade, the location in the midtown area offers an unconventional break in business. Many of the staff have experience with brutal temperatures in the Northern Manhasset in the town of North Bay, Ontario, where “this is where we learned to barbecue with a fire pit and tire irons.”

While owners say customer reactions have been mixed—some love it while others don’t—they’re pleased that it’s something they can add to their menu as temperatures rise. “If it was colder, nobody would say this is a good idea but this would be awesome.”

The James Gourmet Pit is located at 215 James Plaza (near Yonge-Dundas Square), Toronto, ON M5T1Y 1N4.
